Buying Gold or Silver needs no particular occasion but come Dhanteras and jewellery buying is set to soar in the city. Indian women have for ages adorned their looks with cosmetics and herbs. The concept of solah singaar (sixteen accouterments) has been enucaiated from vedic times. These singaar were designed for eveery part of body and include bindi, necklaces, earrings, bangles, rings armlets on the upper arm, waistbands, anklets for the feet, kohl, toe rings, flowers in the hair, henna, perfume, sandalwood paste, the upper garment and the lower garment. Gold and silver form an important aspect of these accouterments and therefore has an auspicious factor attached to it.
It is for this reason that Dhanteras is an auspicious occasion to purchase precious metals like gold, platinum and silver. Believing this day to be auspicious, women purchase some gold or silver or at least one or two new utensils.
Today 26/Oct being Dhanteras, but do we really know whats the real story/history behind it. I don't know... do you....?
Not to worry, here it is....
Dhanteras, sometimes called as Dhantrayodashi falls on the thirteenth day of the month of Ashwin.
Dhanteras is based on very intersting story. The son of king Hema was doomed to die as soon as he completed his sixteenth year. The king and queen wanted their son to enjoy all goodness of life and therefore they got him married. The fourth day of his marriage was to be that dreadful day.
His wife didn't let him sleep and placed around him a lot of gold and silver coins. The entry gate was also jammed with the same. Moverover big lamps were lit all around the palace. She kept telling her husband stories and sung songs so as to keep him awake. As Yama, the God of death came, in the guise of a serpent, he couldn't enter the room of the prince as his eyes were bedazzled by the flash of gold and silver. Yama had to turn back to his world. This way the girl saved her husband's life.
Because of the story, the day is also called 'Yamadeepdaan'. Lamps are kept burning through out the night in the honour of Yama.
The rituals of Dhanteras incorportes elements of this story. On the one hand people invite Goddess of Wealth "Lakshmi" to their houses (symbolically) with different kinds of rituals. All the houses are beautified with lights and colours, specially the enterance is decorated with torans on the doors and rangoli on the floor.
